The mother of all daruma wood carvings. On the back of this Edo Period c.1700 masterpiece is engraved 'Genroku 13' (c.1700) ,'Saigenshin Tsukuri' carved by Saigenshin, a famous zen monk of the time. Also 'Kyosagaju' meaning he was from a temple in the Saga District of Western Kyoto. The Carving is a magnificent flow of lines and expression. Definitely a museum quality piece. Museum piece late 1700`s Kagura mask. Carved out of paulownia wood, these masks were used in Kagura theater which was a Shinto theatrical dance tied to the rythmns of the agricultural calendar. Museum piece jizo boddhisatva dated on one side Kyoho 1 (c.1716) and on the other side, Tempo 2 (C.1830). Hands in the prayer gassho but what makes this Jizo special are a series of hands carved in the stone on both sides of the figure. We have never seen this before. 16" tall and 7 1/2" wide. In the original box signed "mukozuke" meaning set of side dishes, this set of 5 stunning antique Japanese oribe olive green and beige dishes has a beautiful rectangular design on the inside bottom flanked by connecting rings on each end. Each dish has three tiny legs. Oribe was a famed kiln center in Edo Japan 1614-1867 known for it's avant garde designs and elegant serving dishes. All 5 in perfect condition. c.1830. Sensational Mokubei (lived 1767-1833) scholar figurine in polychrome enamels. Famous as a potter working for the Lord of Kii and later the Lord of Kaga where he opened his own kiln. He used to stick his head far into the kiln during firing to ascertain the temperature of the heat by the sound of the fire. Later because of this he lost his hearing and changed his name to Robei, 'which means deaf. His figurines were highly prized for the sencha tea world. This scholar sits with brush and book. Very rare and unusual wood tiled village shrine from Dema - mura village in Mie Province. Dated the year of the tiger C.1818 the shrine houses gods and happiness. Signed on the back with the date and maker, Fujiwara Shokichi. Cypress wood with a bronze lock on the doors to the inner chamber. Antique Japanese 'suzuri bako' letter writing box. Carved out of one piece of wood and then lacquered, the design is of Japanese plum blossoms. On the right are the Japanese characters, 'Kyoku Ten Koki o Gosen' which is the last line of a very famous poem by Fujita Toko, a samurai-statesman who played a huge role at the end of the Edo Period, to help end the shogunate system and open Japan to the west. He personally was instrumental in dealing with Admiral Perry. The poem extols the virtues of humanity and the spirit and was widely sung by samurai warriors at the end of the Edo Period. c.1875.
