Regal free-flowing bamboo and rattan basket from one of the masters of bamaboo basket making, Sakaguchi Sounsai b. 1899-1967. Studied under Tanabe Chikuunsai I and was active in the Osaka and Kyoto region. Featured on page 90 of 'Masters of Bamboo by Melissa Rinne. A masterpiece by one of Japan's preeminent artists, Seiko Sawada b.1894-1988. This signed piece was executed out of keyaki wood in his younger days in the 1930's depicts Ebisu, one of the seven lucky gods, riding a fish and a wave spouting out of the fish's mouth. Daikoku, the god of abundance, is riding his treasure bag holding his hammer of magic. The Sawada Museum is in Atami, Shizuoka. Sawada was awarded the Order of Merit in the 1970's.

Beautiful bronze Noh Theater figure 'Okina' by the acclaimed craftsman "Shusei". His signature is on the back. Rare buddhist pilgrim coat worn on a pilgrimage during esoteric 'shugendo' ascetic practice. The Shingon buddhist practioner, usually a yamabushi priest, would walk from temple to temple over rugged mountains in the Omi Range in Mie Prefecture south of Kyoto. At each temple he would get a red seal stamp of the temple on the coat. Different dieties are stamped on the coat and esoteric sanskrit buddhist characters. Made of asa or fiber.
