This antique Japanese Edo Period c.1840 red bronze utsubata flower vase is actually a Japanese proverb, "Hyotan Kara Koma". Literally, 'a horse from a gourd' meaning "the unexpected can be wonderful". The base of the vase is a wisteria wrapped gourd with an old man climbing on it. It was made so his head can move. On the underside of the top vase is a horse in raised thick bronze. Gourds are regarded as a lucky charm in Japan. Beautiful patina. c.1840. (10" x 11") (26cm x 28cm). Absolutely fabulous bronze square-mouthed almost art deco flower vase in the original paulownia box, dated April, 1847. The kanji on the box reads: Koka 4 Nen Teimi Shigatsu, meaning 1847 in Edo Period in the 4th month (april) of the zodiac calendar. Hirota Gensho Motomu Nari meaning the piece was commissioned for a Mr. Hirota Gensho. On one side of the Kiri box is written: Sentoku Kabin, meaning it was a flower vase fired and colored with rice straw smoke. Exceptionally lovely and well carved Kamakura-bori lacquered hibachi. Kamakura is religiuos center south of Tokyo where kamakura-bori was born in the Edo Period. After carving out of one piece of wood , usually gingo wood, the carving is lacquered and painstakingly polished. This large hibachi has peonies and sunflowers. Gorgeous Taisho Period, c.1915 bronze "usubata" flower vase used for the tea ceremony. Outstanding bronze craftsmanship with 'aka' or red bronze which was used in Japan prior to WW2. Signed on the bottom, 'Arahakasan' which was the Edo Period name for Shitenoji Temple in Osaka. Most likely belonged to the Temple. The flowing waves creates a beautiful contrasting asymmetry. Exceptional early Showa Period c.1937 art deco bronze flower vase in the original signed paulownia box. The kanji on the box reads: Chudo Ume Moyo "bronze vase with plum petal motif. Also Kabin or "flower vase". On the inside is the signature of Tatsugo and his seal. The bronze has plum petals in raised relief and inside small crosses. Fabulously art deco Late Meiji Period/ Early Taisho Period Morita Chikuami bamboo flower basket. Signed on the reverse with an incised signature by the artist: Chikuami Tsukuru or Made by Chikuami (Morita Chikuami, the go or art name of Morita Shintaro). Taisho era, circa 1920. The artist formed the body with basic twill plaiting made irregular by skipping over stays. Wider sections of split bamboo overlay the entire basket. Morita Chikuami won a prize for his work at the fifth Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai (Fifth Domestic Industrial Exhibition) in Meiji 36 (1903). He lived in Kyoto and was active as late as Showa 2 (1927). 16" tall by 6 1/2" wide. Comes with original wood box. Ask for shipping quote.

Very rare find! Signed original box designating this vase as a gift from the Empress Showa Period 16 (C.1942). Must have been a congratulatory gift as the beautiful turtles in relief on the front symbolize longevity and the kanji characters on the back in lovely cursive relief read "Ban Ban Zai" meaning 2 x 10,000 years of congratulations.
