Beautiful Meiji Period C.1890 maki-e raised gold lacquer Tachibana citrus tree with silver inlay cherry blossoms floating around the Tachibana tree. Some of the Tachibana citrus fruit also have silver inlay. Lacquer on rest of mirror case is Nashiji or speckled gold lacquer. The pad the mirror rests on is hand dyed sarasa with natural vegitable dyes from India. On the back of the miror is " Made by Takashima Sagaminokami Mitsutada". 12" tall by 8" wide. Very lovely black lacquered 'suzuri bako' writing box with mother of pearl inlaid leaves and swirling gold gilt vines on the cover. Inside is a silver ink pourer and ink stone and brush. Antique Japanese 'suzuri bako' letter writing box. Carved out of one piece of wood and then lacquered, the design is of Japanese plum blossoms. On the right are the Japanese characters, 'Kyoku Ten Koki o Gosen' which is the last line of a very famous poem by Fujita Toko, a samurai-statesman who played a huge role at the end of the Edo Period, to help end the shogunate system and open Japan to the west. He personally was instrumental in dealing with Admiral Perry. The poem extols the virtues of humanity and the spirit and was widely sung by samurai warriors at the end of the Edo Period. c.1875. In the original box from the turn of the century, c.1900, this elegant antique Japanese black lacquered sweets box has the Myriad Treasures associated with seven gods of good luck in raised gold maki-e on the lid. Among the treasures which are said to ensure prosperity, long life and general good fortune are: coral, rhinoceros horns, the hat and raincoat of invisibility, the purse of inexhaustible riches, the wish granting gem, scrolls and fans etc. On the box is written 'fukurokuju maki-e' the style of raised gold maki-e lacquering and 'shihogata ohira' the style of square sweets box.
