Wonderful and very rare ceramic shishimai lion mask used to scare away demons and bring good luck. This ceramic shishi mask was in the inner chamber of a Shinto Shrine in Mie Prefecture dedicated warding off evil for local farmers. washi rice paper simulates the mane. Early Meiji Period, C. 1880.
