Exceptional and rare Meiji Period C.1890 bronze Shachihoko or mythical dragon carp Koro or incense censor. . Shachi or Shachihoko were frequently used as roof ornaments in the Edo period (1600-1868) and found atop castles, tower gates, and samurai homes. These fish-shaped ornaments are placed at both ends of the main roof ridge, with the male Shachi placed on the left and the female Shachi on the right. The creatures are thought to provide protection against fire, as they are attributed with the power to control rain. This dragon /carp has a lid on the upper tail. Wonderfully expressive Fukutsuke keyaki wood carving from the late Meiji Era C.1900. Sits on a equally old wood keyaki stand. Fukutsuke was a legendary handicapped boy with a big head that brought a certain merchant great prosperity by being around the shop. From that time other merchants would have likenesses carved and keep them in their shops to also attract good fortune. Great condition with a few nicks. 11 inces wide and 10 inces tall. Rich patina from years of use in an old Japanese farm house as a jizaikagi or pot stabilizer hook over the open cooking hearth. Museum quality Edo Period C.1860 zen temple mizubachi. Lost wax cast with a great dragon spout in grand detail and spectacular shishi mythical lion ornament on the top of the lid. The diaper motif on the base is in raised relief and equally spectacular. The spigot on the dragon head is permanent so we are assuming that there was a constant water flow. Very slight indentation on one of the hanging jewels but so slight you can only see at the right angle. H:51cm x W: 43cm. Ask for shipping quote.

Spectacular Edo Period C.1860 carved gold gilt lacquered wood dragon. On the inside of zen buddhist temples the altar has a gold ceiling hanging over the statue of buddha. Exceptional cypress wood buddhist Amidha Buddha sitting on gold lacquer lotus base on a gold laquer stand. We don`t think the lotus stand the buddha is sitting on and the gold base stand were originally together but they go together very nicely so we purchased this piece. The buddha`s facial expression rich with compassion and the carving of the hair with glass on forehead chakra is outstanding. The halo is in very good condition as is the piece. Antique Japanese 'suzuri bako' letter writing box. Carved out of one piece of wood and then lacquered, the design is of Japanese plum blossoms. On the right are the Japanese characters, 'Kyoku Ten Koki o Gosen' which is the last line of a very famous poem by Fujita Toko, a samurai-statesman who played a huge role at the end of the Edo Period, to help end the shogunate system and open Japan to the west. He personally was instrumental in dealing with Admiral Perry. The poem extols the virtues of humanity and the spirit and was widely sung by samurai warriors at the end of the Edo Period. c.1875.
