Unbelievable signed and dated C. 1705 , June, black lacquered zen buddhist temple stand. Also written on the underside is that it was donated to a zen priest on an auspicious day by a Mr. Ichiya Hachinobu from Okubiniro - cho in Osaka. The sides of the stand have transoms of intricately carved swallows frolicing among bamboo and plum blossoms. Some lacquer has worn away but in remarkably excellent condition. Ask for shipping quote. Sensational Mokubei (lived 1767-1833) scholar figurine in polychrome enamels. Famous as a potter working for the Lord of Kii and later the Lord of Kaga where he opened his own kiln. He used to stick his head far into the kiln during firing to ascertain the temperature of the heat by the sound of the fire. Later because of this he lost his hearing and changed his name to Robei, 'which means deaf. His figurines were highly prized for the sencha tea world. This scholar sits with brush and book. Rare set of 4 Meiji Period c.1900 yukata kimono stencils from Ise. Each piece is 2 laminated sheets of mulberry paper treated with a persimmons tanin and aged for 2 years by smoking for strength. The stencil carver then makes his or her own tools to carve out the desired patterns which are then applied with rice resist for the desired dying. Absolutely fabulous bronze square-mouthed almost art deco flower vase in the original paulownia box, dated April, 1847. The kanji on the box reads: Koka 4 Nen Teimi Shigatsu, meaning 1847 in Edo Period in the 4th month (april) of the zodiac calendar. Hirota Gensho Motomu Nari meaning the piece was commissioned for a Mr. Hirota Gensho. On one side of the Kiri box is written: Sentoku Kabin, meaning it was a flower vase fired and colored with rice straw smoke.
