Wonderful carving of 'Tenjin' the Shinto god of learning. In ancient times he was unjustly exiled and became a hero in Japanese folklore. Is revered as the god of learning and many Shinto shrines all over Japan are dedicated to him. This piece is from the Taisho Period c. 1915. Fantastic wood carving of Kukai or later known as Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who brought esoteric Shingon Buddhism back from China to Japan. He established the headquarters on the sacred mountain of Mt. Koya near Nara. Carved in the late EDO Period c. 1860's, the statue has 'gi yaman' or original glass eyes. Kobo Daishi sits in his regal monk posture holding a sutra scroll. His right hand once held glass prayer beads. He sits on a wood gold lacquered temple stand which is intricately ornate. Fascinating Taisho Period C.1920 tea ceremony bronze tripod incense censor. Almost art deco in design and feel. The Murashi-do bronze was dipped in hot oi at firing to create the mottled patinated colorings. The handles are elephant heads. The highlight of the piece is the very rare and exquisite square mouth and lid. The lid is adorned with a shishi lion which covers the hole the incense smoke wafts out of. Simply superb. Simple elegance envelops this wonderful late Meiji Period C.1910 bronze 'koro' crane incense burner. The piece has two parts; the top consisting of the crane's feathers and head, and the bottom which contains the ash. On the underside of the bottom in relief are the crane's legs tucked under. Regal altar temple table from a zen buddhist temple in the Kyoto area. The top is Japanese 'keyaki' (zelkova) or elm. The carvings in relief are superior. Lotus flowers and leaves. Exceptional Taisho Period c. 1910 'suzuri bako' maki-e lacquered caligraphy writing box. Sensational gold maki-e chrysanthemums some with silver leaf petals and some with raised maki-e or mother of pearl inlay. Chrysanthemum petals and leaves with gold maki-e and mother of pearl make up this elegant, rich mosiac. On the inside of the top are 3 gorgeous butterflies also in raised gold maki-e. The bottom inside has a silver ink pourer with a pine motif and a black nachi ink stone. The bottom of the bottom box has some worn away lacquer on the corners and on the top, one of the mother of pearl chrysanthemums has a crack. Otherwise in fabulous condition. Ask for shipping quote. Unbelievable signed and dated C. 1705 , June, black lacquered zen buddhist temple stand. Also written on the underside is that it was donated to a zen priest on an auspicious day by a Mr. Ichiya Hachinobu from Okubiniro - cho in Osaka. Sensational Mokubei (lived 1767-1833) scholar figurine in polychrome enamels. Famous as a potter working for the Lord of Kii and later the Lord of Kaga where he opened his own kiln. He used to stick his head far into the kiln during firing to ascertain the temperature of the heat by the sound of the fire. Later because of this he lost his hearing and changed his name to Robei, 'which means deaf. His figurines were highly prized for the sencha tea world. This scholar sits with brush and book.
