Signed on the bottom of the jizo bosatsu (bodhisattva) is the date in Japanese - Tenwa 1 which is 1681. This bodhisattva of compassion is the Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva. His vow is to save all sentient beings. Often seen in priestly garb with tonsured head and holding the 'Hoju' or buddhist jewel of wisdom. The bottom of the stand he sits on is intricately carved with buddhist clouds and lotus flowers. We don't believe it is the original stand but it is a perfect match. Hands in fantastic condition. (1681). (12" x 7") (30cm x 18cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $100.

Exceptionally bold, Meiji period, large bronze antique Japanese vase with copper liner. On the vase are paulownia leaves in raised relief. Along with chrysanthemums, the paulownia leaf has been a symbol of the Imperial family for centuries. Hideyoshi, the second shogun of Japan, took it as his family crest. Legend holds that the paulownia is the only tree on which the mythical phoenix alights. Condition excellent with an unnoticable slight indent on one side. c.1895. (14" x 10") (34cm x 25cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $95.

One of the best examples of Japanese bronzes we have seen in an increasingly sparse market, this beautiful piece is worth a second look. Deep, rich Meiji Period (c.1867-1912) bronze with carp swimming over waves in raised relief on one side; geese frolicing among grasses, also in raised relief on the other side. Handles come out of baku's (bad dream eaters) mouths. Absolutely stunning. c.1890. (10½" x 5½") (27cm x 14cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $90.
