Brilliant late Meiji Period shrine gable carving of a carp swimming through waves up a waterfall. According to legend once the carp, a symbol of courage and determination, makes it over the waterfall it turns into a dragon and resides in the celestial realm as a guardian of the buddha's teachings. Audacious Kano Chikanobu b.1660-1728 dragon painting. Ink on silk, the painting measures 56" wide and 38" high. Chikanobu was born in Musashi Province. In 1678 he entered the service of the Shogunate. In 1681 he worked with his father at Edo Castle painting fusuma, scrolls and paintings. In 1719, he received the honorary title 'Hogen' reserved for master artists. In the same year, at the command of the Shogun, painted a screen to be given to Korea.
