This antique Japanese Edo Period c.1840 red bronze utsubata flower vase is actually a Japanese proverb, "Hyotan Kara Koma". Literally, 'a horse from a gourd' meaning "the unexpected can be wonderful". The base of the vase is a wisteria wrapped gourd with an old man climbing on it. It was made so his head can move. On the underside of the top vase is a horse in raised thick bronze. Gourds are regarded as a lucky charm in Japan. Beautiful patina. c.1840. (10" x 11") (26cm x 28cm). The configuration is very unusual with the chrysanthemum middle section, the imperial royal family crest, sitting on a tripod legged base. Usually temple lantern come with a long stem. Breathtaking antique Japanese cloissone vase from the Ando Factory. In the original signed box, the characters read 'shigyokuju yoran kabin' meaning purple jewel glaze orchid flower vase, and 'Ando ShippoTen Tsukuri' made by the Ando Cloissone Company. Antique Japanese 'suzuri bako' letter writing box. Carved out of one piece of wood and then lacquered, the design is of Japanese plum blossoms. On the right are the Japanese characters, 'Kyoku Ten Koki o Gosen' which is the last line of a very famous poem by Fujita Toko, a samurai-statesman who played a huge role at the end of the Edo Period, to help end the shogunate system and open Japan to the west. He personally was instrumental in dealing with Admiral Perry. The poem extols the virtues of humanity and the spirit and was widely sung by samurai warriors at the end of the Edo Period. c.1875. Exceptionally bold, Meiji period, large bronze antique Japanese vase with copper liner. On the vase are paulownia leaves in raised relief. Along with chrysanthemums, the paulownia leaf has been a symbol of the Imperial family for centuries. Hideyoshi, the second shogun of Japan, took it as his family crest. Legend holds that the paulownia is the only tree on which the mythical phoenix alights. Condition excellent with an unnoticable slight indent on one side. c.1895. (14" x 10") (34cm x 25cm).
