Smashing pair of zen temple buddhist cloud carvings form the late Edo Period/early Meiji Period c. 1870. Carved out of cypress wood and with gold gilt. Wonderfully expressive Fukutsuke keyaki wood carving from the late Meiji Era C.1900. Sits on a equally old wood keyaki stand. Fukutsuke was a legendary handicapped boy with a big head that brought a certain merchant great prosperity by being around the shop. From that time other merchants would have likenesses carved and keep them in their shops to also attract good fortune. Great condition with a few nicks. 11 inces wide and 10 inces tall. Rich patina from years of use in an old Japanese farm house as a jizaikagi or pot stabilizer hook over the open cooking hearth. The hook enabled the pot height to be adjusted on a bamboo pole hung over the hearth. Art deco as an art object, this piece of folk art oozes a utilitarian grandeur. The mother of all daruma wood carvings. On the back of this Edo Period c.1700 masterpiece is engraved 'Genroku 13' (c.1700) ,'Saigenshin Tsukuri' carved by Saigenshin, a famous zen monk of the time. Also 'Kyosagaju' meaning he was from a temple in the Saga District of Western Kyoto. The Carving is a magnificent flow of lines and expression. Definitely a museum quality piece.
