A brilliant set of 5 gentlemen from the Edo Period C.1850 by Kunisada I, one of the masters of the time. He was given the name Toyokuni III by his famous teacher Toyokuni in 1844. Exceptional Yoshitora original woodblock scroll dated feb. 1866. Yoshitora's real name was Tatsugoro Nagashima and he was a pupil of Kuniyoshi. This woodblock scroll with vivid detail and color is of an 'oiran' the queen of the Geishas. This style of woodblock scroll is called 'Takenaga Hosho' indicating the long length of the woodblock and in this field the narrow width is called 'habahiro hashira-e' (pillar style). This antique Japanese Kunisada woodblock is a scene from a kabuki play performed in Kieigannen 1 (1848) at the Ichimura-za Kabuki Theater in Edo (Tokyo). Titled, 'Inazuma Byoshi' this play is the first kabuki play scripted from a novel. It was taken from a novel of the same name by the famous author, Santo Kyoden, written in 1806. The three kabuki actors are: Banto Shiuka, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Ichimura Hazaemon. Kunisada studied under Toyokuni and took the name Toyokuni III. Kunisada was born 1786 and died 1864. c.1848.
