Very rare and exceptional Late Edo/Early Meiji Period C.1880 bronze buddhist temple lantern. Originally held a small dish for an oil lamp. Thick heavy bronze that has oxidized with time to produce a lovely blue/green patina. On tripod legs with fantastic vine motif on the main body panels. Hinges on door still work. Lost wax cast. Shigaraki Sembei tsubo (sembei jar) which became popular in late 16th century for serving sembei rice crackers at a tea ceremony. They are shaped like a Katatsuki tea caddie with squared shoulders and a barrel-shaped torso cantilevered over distinctive tapered foot. This lovely c.1880 jar has trails of applied iron-ash glaze and kanji inscribed which we can`t read yet. Jars of this sort are in collections at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Later Sembei Jars were sent to Uji, the tea leaf growing area in S. Kyoto to be filled with tea and uncapped at special ceremonies in winter. H: 13" x W:6 1/2". Excellent condition. Ask for shiping quote.

Rare buddhist pilgrim coat worn on a pilgrimage during esoteric 'shugendo' ascetic practice. The Shingon buddhist practioner, usually a yamabushi priest, would walk from temple to temple over rugged mountains in the Omi Range in Mie Prefecture south of Kyoto. At each temple he would get a red seal stamp of the temple on the coat. Different dieties are stamped on the coat and esoteric sanskrit buddhist characters. Made of asa or fiber. Royal Shigaraki sake storage jar with the 16 petal chrysanthemum crest which could only be used by the royal imperial family connected to the Emperor and Empress. Very rare. Exceptional Taisho Period C.1920 Bronze Garden Lantern. The round decorative middle piece aesthetically balances the simple top and base. In fine relief each panel has a scene; one is a sage, another is a dragon. The door opens to allow a lighting source. In the old days it was an oil dish and wick.
