He was born in 1934 and won the Japan Traditional Art Gold Prize. In 1990 he won the prestigeous Kanashige Toyo Gold Prize. He started the famous Juko-gama kiln in Shimane Prefecture. Brilliant Kamakurabori box with peonies carved in relief lacquered in red vermillion. The inside of the box is lacquered in black. The bottom of the box has the characters Showa 45 meaning it was carved in 1970, Spring by a Mr. Tami. Rich impact art deco plate from the pottery master Kanou Mitsuo. He was born and lived in Kyoto c.1903-1970. He was known for his tortoiseshell glazes. In 1949 he won first prize at the Nitten, Japan's prestigious Fine Arts Exhibition. Later he was asked to be the top judge in the event. The plate comes in the original signed kiri wood box and on the lid it reads, 'Bekkou Yu' tortoiseshell glaze, and 'Hirabachi' flat plate. Gorgeous art deco Tamekichi Mitsui III signed Kutani plate. He received his artist's name Tamekichi III in 1961 from his teacher, and was soon afterward commissioned to create a plate for Edwin Reischhauer's visit in 1962. He was a favorite of the royal family who bought numerous pieces in 1976. Also from 1979-1988 Japanese Prime Ministers took his works abroad as gifts during state trips. This special art deco Kyoto fired ceramic flower vase is by one of the acclaimed Japanese potters of the last century, Shinkai Kanzan. He was born in 1912 and learned from Kiyomizu Rokubei VI, a Japanese National Treasue of ceramics. He came from a distinguished line of Kyoto artists, his grandfather being Seifu Yohei III a very famous Kyoto potter. Shinkan was awarded inumerable prizes, one being at the 1939 San Francisco Expo right before his career was interrupted and he was forced to go to Siberia with the military. He was in a Russian Gulag until 1948 when he came back to Japan and resumed his pottery. He won the Gold Prize at the 1951 Japanese Art Expo.
