Zen Buddhist Temple lanterns dated Showa 43 (1969). Inscripted on the lantern tops is the japanese characters 'senzo bodai no tame' meaning they were commissioned by Hamano Koichiro and Tawaramoto Genko so that their ancestors would be come buddhas. Kodo Arts has installed lighting in them so that they can stand or be hung as lamps with electric bulbs inside. Each lantern is 14" wide ; 19" high. Lovely pair of Showa Period C.1930 lanterns with electricity and small bulbs inside. Throws of a beautiful ambient light. Made of metal with mesh sides on the hexagon shape. One side is a door that opens with the inscription explaining these lamps were donated to Shofuku-ji Temple by Mt.Koya-san in honor of the 1150 year memorial of Kobotaishi, the revered monk who brought Tendai Buddhism to Mt.
