Gorgeous art deco Tamekichi Mitsui III signed Kutani plate. He received his artist's name Tamekichi III in 1961 from his teacher, and was soon afterward commissioned to create a plate for Edwin Reischhauer's visit in 1962. He was a favorite of the royal family who bought numerous pieces in 1976. Also from 1979-1988 Japanese Prime Ministers took his works abroad as gifts during state trips. He was a professor of art in Washington D.C. from 1997-2004 and had his own exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum in 2002. Perfect condition in a signed kiri wood box. $880. Mimura Kazuhiro(b.1931) is a nerikomi (multi-colored marbled ware) specialist who has had a very successful career exhibiting throughout Japan and at juried exhibitions as well, especially at the prestigious yearly Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition. Sensational Yanase Asao signed plate from the Onta Yaki Kilns in Oita Prefecture in Kyushu. C.1975. Yanase Asao is 70 years old now and will most likely be designated a National Living Treasure. Onta pottery is famous for the subtle clays and white and green glazes. Bernard Leach, the famous potter studied Onta Yaki in Oita and it had a profound influence on his work. Gorgeous Oribe ceramic kogo which held the incense used in the tea ceremony. Signed in the original kiri (paulownia) wood box by the master, Nagira Yasuhisa. He was born in 1934 and won the Japan Traditional Art Gold Prize. In 1990 he won the prestigeous Kanashige Toyo Gold Prize. He started the famous Juko-gama kiln in Shimane Prefecture. Signed on the reverse with a chiseled signature by the artist: Keiten (Takahashi Keiten, born 1920). Showa era, circa 1960 – 1970. Born in 1920 in Yamagata Prefecture, Takahashi Keiten first studied metal casting under Nagano Tetsushi in 1950. His work was first accepted into the government-sponsored 7th Nitten exhibition in 1951. In 1963, he won the encouragement prize at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition) and from 1972 served as a judge for the exhibition. He has presented his work to both the Showa Emperor and the Heisei Emperor on the occasions of their visits to Yamagata. In 1996, Takahashi Keiten was designated Juyo Mukei Bunkazai or Important Intangible Cultural Asset (commonly known as a Living National Treasure). 7" high by 4" in diameter. Ask for shipping quote.

Superb murashido bronze vase by National Living Treasure Takahashi Keiten 1920-2009. Designated as a National living Treasure in 1996, he has presented works to all the emperors many memebers of the Imperial family. Rare and exceptional Otafuku mask by one of Japan's preeminent masters of the modern era, Tamaya Shoubei 7th. He was famouse in Gifu for his karakuri - ningyoshi (wind-up dolls). All painstakingly hand made and delicately constructed. He was chosen to restore the Chahakobi Ningyo, one of the first karakuri ningyos among others including a famous karakuri ningyo in the Gion Festival in Kyoto. This Otafuku mask was a side pleasure and it is signed on the back. Made of paulownia wood and gofun crushed oyster shell paint. Excelent condition. With wood box (not original). Zen Buddhist Temple lanterns dated Showa 43 (1969). Inscripted on the lantern tops is the japanese characters 'senzo bodai no tame' meaning they were commissioned by Hamano Koichiro and Tawaramoto Genko so that their ancestors would be come buddhas. Mitsuo Kano (1903-1970) was a very great First Class Japanese Potter. His famous works sold for high prices at auction houses such as Christie's both before and after his passing. He won the Blue-Ribbon Award of one of the most famous Japanese Art Exhibitions, Nitten Exhibition in 1949. Known for his exquisite glazes, this vase is no exception. Oblong in shape and very dynamic. And very large at 41cm tall by 44cm wide. Kano Mitsuo studied under Komori Shinobu (1889-1962) and at the Kyoto City Pottery Research School. His work is represented in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. He won the Ministry of Education Grand Prize in 1998. Rich impact art deco plate from the pottery master Kanou Mitsuo. He was born and lived in Kyoto c.1903-1970. He was known for his tortoiseshell glazes. In 1949 he won first prize at the Nitten, Japan's prestigious Fine Arts Exhibition. Later he was asked to be the top judge in the event. The plate comes in the original signed kiri wood box and on the lid it reads, 'Bekkou Yu' tortoiseshell glaze, and 'Hirabachi' flat plate.
