Sensational Onishi Rakusai V c.1925 signed ceramic pottery flower vase in original signed paulownia wood box. This art deco Akahada vase from the Nara region was fired in the Kohakugama Kiln (so named by the Koriyama Daimyo (Lord) of Nara in the Edo Period. Serene Gakko Bosatsu, the bodhisattva of moonlight (lunar radiance) signed by Nanto. C.1950 this Gakko Bosatsu is in the style of the Gakko at Todai-ji Temple in Nara where Gakko and Nikko, the bodhisattva of sunlight flank the large Fukukenjaku Kannon. Exquisite Kannon, goddess of compassion and mercy on round bronze plaque in fine raised relief. 36 cm in diameter, the Kannon has a blissful, serene expression. The stamp on the front is the artis name, Ito Shinji. On the back is the inscription that this was an offering to a temple with the date, Showa 12 (1937) July which was an auspicious month. Rich impact art deco plate from the pottery master Kanou Mitsuo. He was born and lived in Kyoto c.1903-1970. He was known for his tortoiseshell glazes. In 1949 he won first prize at the Nitten, Japan's prestigious Fine Arts Exhibition. Later he was asked to be the top judge in the event. The plate comes in the original signed kiri wood box and on the lid it reads, 'Bekkou Yu' tortoiseshell glaze, and 'Hirabachi' flat plate. Gorgeous art deco Tamekichi Mitsui III signed Kutani plate. He received his artist's name Tamekichi III in 1961 from his teacher, and was soon afterward commissioned to create a plate for Edwin Reischhauer's visit in 1962. He was a favorite of the royal family who bought numerous pieces in 1976. Also from 1979-1988 Japanese Prime Ministers took his works abroad as gifts during state trips. He was a professor of art in Washington D.C. from 1997-2004 and had his own exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum in 2002. Perfect condition in a signed kiri wood box. $880. Just lovely antique Japanese Taisho Period c.1925 bronze flower vase with cranes under a moon in superb raised relief. Hotsuma Katori was born Meiji Period c.1874 and died in 1954. He was a graduate of the prestigious Tokyo Art School in 1891 winning honors as the top student and artist. He won the silver prize In the 1900 Paris World Expo. His works are in the Kyoto National Museum and the Tokyo National Museum. His son, also a bronze craftsman, is a National Treasure. Comes with wood stand. Perfect condition. c.1925.
