Lovely pair of quail frolicing among flowers and chrysanthemums on silver leaf paper backing. A small screen from the Edo Period, C.1860, would have been used for a Girls Day doll festival. Painted in the Rimpa syle, its size perfect for over a couch. Length:110cm and height:40cm. Very good condition with silver leaf faded here and there and one small peeling of silk border. Brilliant folk art piece. A clay 'Fushimi Ningyo' sumo doll from the 1930s. Fushimi Ningyo dolls were sought after souvenirs by visitors to Kyoto. Fushimi Inari being one of the must see great shrines of southern Kyoto. The detail of the arms and fabulous facial expression make this a collector's piece.
