Fantastic wood carving of Kukai or later known as Kobo Daishi, the buddhist monk who brought esoteric Shingon Buddhism back from China to Japan. He established the headquarters on the sacred mountain of Mt. Koya near Nara. Carved in the late EDO Period c. 1860's, the statue has 'gi yaman' or original glass eyes. Kobo Daishi sits in his regal monk posture holding a sutra scroll. His right hand once held glass prayer beads. He sits on a wood gold lacquered temple stand which is intricately ornate. The condition of Kobo Daishi is good with a bit of wear behind his head. See pictures. H:about 24cm; W: about 28cm. Ask for shipping quote.
