Rare and exceptional Otafuku mask by one of Japan's preeminent masters of the modern era, Tamaya Shoubei 7th. He was famouse in Gifu for his karakuri - ningyoshi (wind-up dolls). All painstakingly hand made and delicately constructed. He was chosen to restore the Chahakobi Ningyo, one of the first karakuri ningyos among others including a famous karakuri ningyo in the Gion Festival in Kyoto. This Otafuku mask was a side pleasure and it is signed on the back. Made of paulownia wood and gofun crushed oyster shell paint. Excelent condition. With wood box (not original).
