Black Lacquered Mother of Pearl Table. This is a low table used in ancestor worship rituals. The gorgeous peony flower is a symbol of abundance and wealth. The delightfully rendered dokkaebi goblins that adorn each leg are guardians that chase away evil spirits. The clouds are symbols of Heaven, and the plum blossoms are symbols of courage. As you can see in the photo, there is some loss to one of the dokkaebi goblins, but this table is in otherwise amazing and excellent condition. 25w x 13d x 11.75h inches, 63.5w x 33d x 30h cm.

Korean Temple Painting of Jijang (the Bodhisattva of Hell) with the Seven Stars Spirit (Chilseong), with original temple inscription. This painting came from the Myonbu-jon Hall of the Underworld of a large Buddhist temple. The center figure in this painting is Jijang Bosal (Sanskrit: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva), who postponed his own ascension to Heaven to relieve and rescue souls from Hell. He holds in his left hand the cintamani wish-granting pearl that lights up the darkness of Hell. The seven figures to his left and the seven figures to his right represent Chilseong, the Seven Stars Spirit of the Big Dipper. Chilseong controls people's destinies. To Jijang's left in the front row is the monk Tao-ming (Korean: Tomyong) who was once a Tang prince, and to Jijang's right in the front row is the demon king Poisonless (Korean: Mudok Kwiwang). The painting is in good condition. The frame is is partially separated from the painting. This is easy to repair, but we have not done so, as you may want to replace the frame. The frames on Korean Buddhist temple paintings are almost never original, as they were not framed originally, so it is perfectly fine to replace the frame. Colors on silk. Frame: 53.75 x 46.25 inches, 136.5 x 117.5 cm; Painting: 45.75 x 37.75 inches, 116 x 96 cm.

Large 19th Century Korean Sharkskin Jang Geom Sword with Silver Overlay. The scabbard is covered in sharkskin and lacquered black over that. The handle is very interesting and is covered in sharkskin underneath the heavy leather wrapping, and over the sharkskin there is a thick brass foil that is hammered to look like sharkskin. This is a unique technique. The end fitting is missing. The crossguard is shaky because there are a few washers missing from the sword. The blade goes all the way in the scabbard tightly but is off-center by about half an inch. 61.5 inches, 155 cm.

Exquisite Lotus Form Celadon Saucer with the most desirable sea-green color found only in 12th Century Korean celadon. This is the color that inspired the Chinese to refer to Korean celadon as "first under Heaven". The Korean love of forms from nature is evident here in the graceful foliate shape of this saucer. The raised receptacle is a carved and incised upturned lotus, the Buddhist symbol of purity and rebirth. The beautiful blue-green celadon glaze has pooled deeply in the carving of the upturned lotus, creating a stunning contrast with the surrounding lighter glaze. This masterfully designed saucer has ten petals forming the rim, with incised camellias (symbol of faithfulness and longevity) within each petal separated by a deeply carved line between each petal. Each petal has an interior curve that forms another ten-petaled flower within the outer flower, with a deeply recessed interior adorned with a beautifully incised seascape and a fish. The fish, because it never closes its eyes (even when it sleeps), is a symbol of eternal vigilance. The saucer sits atop a gorgeous ten-petaled floral base with lotus leaves incised into each petal. An altogether beautiful masterpiece of Korean celadon art. There is a small dot of old gold lacquer repair to the rim. Serious collectors know that old, native gold lacquer repairs actually add to the value. 5.75w x 2.5h inches, 14.5w x 6.5h cm.

Late 14th/Early 15th Century Rare and Important Early Buncheong Bowl with Black and White Slip Inlaid geese (symbol of faithfulness), cranes (symbol of faithfulness and longevity), and orchids (symbol of modesty and purity). This is an important piece because it was created right on the cusp between Goryeo Dynasty celadon and Joseon Dynasty buncheong, and has elements of both, making it a rare transitional piece. The inlay is from the Goryeo Period, but the brushed white slip encircling the bowl is from the Joseon Period. This is the only transitional piece we have ever offered for sale, so this is a very rare opportunity to nicely complete a Korean ceramics collection. The delightful inlaid motifs have a rare feel of both the Goryeo and Joseon aesthetic, and the color of the bowl is a blend of the final phase of Goryeo celadon and the very earliest phase of Joseon buncheong. This extraordinary bowl beautifully and perfectly captures the transition as well as, and even better than, some of the rare transitional pieces you see in museums. 5.5w x 1.5h inches, 14w x 4h cm.

A Very Large Painting, Assembled Spirits by Ahn Moon Hoon. Paintings by Ahn Moon Hoon sell very well at auctions in Korea. His popularity is attributed to the deeply spiritual nature of his paintings, and his textured, three-dimensional paper surfaces. This really is an exceptional example of his work, with a beautifully saturated palette and a vibrant aura. The design and colors of the large wood frame are also wonderful and perfect. The asking price here is much lower than it would be at auction in Korea, especially for such a fine and very large example. Frame: 75.75 x 60.5 inches, 192.5 x 154.5 cm; Painting: 64.5 x 49 inches, 164 x 124.5 cm.
