Set of Three Nesting Wood Boxes covered with Applied Hand-Cut Paper Designs, finished with a light oil, very much like the one in the Brooklyn Museum (see page 163 of the Korean Art Collection in the Brooklyn Museum, 2006). All of the boxes are lined with budok talismanic prints. The prints alone are rare and valuable. You will never find another set like this. The bats are a symbol of happiness. The Korean Taeguk symbol adorns the lids and sides of each box. With one more section than the two-sectioned yin and yang symbol, the three-sectioned Korean Samtaeguk symbolizes Heaven (red), Earth (green) and Humankind (yellow), which combine and interlock to form the supreme ultimate unity of cosmological forces. A nice example of the old tradition of Korean Hanji (Paper) Art. Fine and Beautifully Embroidered Spoon and Chopstick Case (Sujeohjip) with peonies (symbol of prosperity), butterfly (happiness), bamboo (integrity), pine tree (longevity), and the mythical bullocho longevity plant. The deer and cranes are longevity symbols, and when they are paired like this, they are symbols of eternal love. The spoon symbolizes sustenance and life, so it was appropriate for it to be kept in such a beautiful embroidered case. This wonderful spoon and chopstick case is further adorned with silk tassels and a nice example of Madeup, the Korean art of knotting. The characters on the back translate to "five blessings for one hundred years". It must have been a proud possession of a Korean housewife many years ago. 10 x 4 inches, 25.5 x 10 cm.

Woo Jong Taek (born 1973) paints with ink and watercolor on both sides of the paper, combining the ancient techniques of Goryeo Dynasty Buddhist painting with modern techniques to create compositions that are deeply contemplative meditations on our modern times, casting the 21st Century everyman as Bodhisattva, offering us a thoughtful way to see our world. Woo is in touch with Korea's ancient history while he is also informed by the modern minjung 'people's movement' in art. His paintings are a rare and paradoxical combination of bold brushwork and sensitive rendering, and characters that seem timid, but are confident in their compassion. They reward repeated viewing with a variety of emotions, ‘hope’ being chief among them. 51 x 27 inches, 130 x 69 cm.
