A similar jar acquired from us is published on page 86 of the Smithsonian catalogue, Symbols of Identity. The Haeju jar that we offer here has a beautiful painting in cobalt blue of a chrysanthemum spray, whose many petals are a symbol of abundance, and the other side of the jar has a stylized painting of persimmons, a symbol of joy and friendship in Korea. The persimmon's many seeds are a symbol of many blessings such as the joy of many friends or many children. In 1883, when royal support for the Bunwon kins ended, the kilns in Haeju, North Korea took over in a big way. Though Haeju jars are quite affordable, even the most serious collectors and major museums have them in their collections, because they are admired for their beautiful and freely expressive brushwork. Haeju kilns did not have to follow the restrictive rules and iconography of the royal kilns, so the painting in underglaze cobalt blue is bold, free, and very creative. Recent Korean Art Society events at the Brooklyn Museum and the Burke Collection included the viewing of Haeju ceramics in both of these very prominent Korean collections. Korean Antique Blue Porcelain Fish Form Water Dropper. The fish was a Confucian and Buddhist symbol of tireless dedication and constant vigilance, because fish never close their eyes, even when they are sleeping. The water dropper was one of the Joseon Dynasty scholar's most prized possessions. He would use it to mix his ink when writing letters, painting, and writing poetry. A scholar's water dropper was a symbol of his refinement and good taste. In keeping with the Korean Confucian gentleman's aesthetic, artifice and colorful designs that catered to base instincts were to be avoided, while a natural and deep respect for nature was to be upheld. This lovely water dropper in a fish shape was likely treasured by its 19th Century owner. 3 inches wide X 1 inch high, 7.5 cm wide x 2.5 cm high.

Antique Korean Rice Cake Press Mold (Dasikpan) with Lovely Carved Chrysanthemums (Symbol of fertility because of its many petals) Plum Blossoms (symbol of courage because it bloom early, before winter in finished), and Bat (Symbol of happiness, because the Korean word for bat "bok" is a homonym for the word for happiness). A very nice example of Korean folk art. These were treasured by Joseon Dynasty wives. When they were not in use, they were on display in the kitchen. Fine Example of an Antique Korean Honey Jar with Beautiful, Rich Color. This is a Joseon Dynasty Sokganju (Oja) Honey Jar. It is well-proportioned and has twelve facets which were cut with a bamboo potter's knife. These add a sculptered quality to its otherwise globular shape. The famous 20th century Japanese potter Hamada Shoji (1894-1977) admired the cut facets on Korean ceramics and imitated them in his own work. These jars are known as Ame-Yu in Japan, where they are widely admired. These jars are ame-glazed, a dark brown glaze with a molasses-like color and texture. Through Hamada, Korean-style faceting entered the work of several contemporary potters in the West. In addition to their decorative effect, Korean facets had a utilitarian function. They made it easier to bind the jar with straw twine to hold the lid on tight and preserve the honey or other foodstuff inside. Extra-tight packing is still called "honey-packing" in Korea today. Faceting was also used on Korean wine bottles but purely for visual effect. The walls of the vessel were thrown extra thick to allow the facets to be cut. A few small and common rim chips, as shown in the photos, but otherwise excellent condition. A similar jar is shown in the G. St G.M. Gompertz book, Korean Pottery & Porcelain of the Yi Period (Plate # 177). 7 inches (18cm) high x 7 inches (18cm) wide.
