A lovely and very early sterling brooch by Taxco maestro Rafael Melendez, who worked with William Spratling prior to opening his own workshop in 1939. The brooch features a striking pre-Columbian parrot motif and is made of 980 sterling silver. It measures 2.25 inches high and 2 inches at its widest point, and is marked with the conjoined RM mark and the 980 stamp. This pin is in excellent condition, with a warm patina emphasizing its form and minor surface scratches consistent with a piece of this age. It has an old style C clasp that works perfectly.
