Highly collectible set of Japanese Somayaki crackle-glaze pottery, consisting of 21 cups, 1 saucer, sugar bowl (with lid) and 1 ashtray. Received as a gift approx. 20 years ago and in perfect condition. Somayaki pottery dates back as far as 1690 and grew to around 100 kilns in the Fukushima area of northern Japan. The pottery is identified by the double-wall construction of the cups (to retain heat) and its beautiful celadon color and crackle appearance. Many pieces feature a gold-painted galloping horse which was an identifier of this type of pottery. Sadly, many potters lost everything in the 2012 earthquake, tsunami and ensuing nuclear accident and production has never fully recovered, making these pieces ever more collectible.
