Antique Silk Tabriz Prayer Rug, Northwest Persia. A high quality pictorial and directional design. This rug is a unique interpretation of the traditional symmetrical columnar niche format depicting a waq-waq tree, a Persian oracular tree whose branches bear fruit with the heads of men and mythical animals. The rug is intricately complete with a variety of flora, creatures, humans, camels, birds, fish and dragons all on a copper colored field and a dark blue sky. The major border having scrolling vines on a cream ground. A very fine silk pile in Persian knot tightly woven on an all silk foundation. The ends have long fringe and the edges are tightly wrapped. Condition: Excellent. Measuring 56 in. x 73.5 in. (142 x 187cm) 9.3lbs. Circa 1890. Provenance: R. H.
