A historic document and beautiful lithograph framed of “THE SURRENDER OF GENERAL LEE” 1866, measuring 22x25” "The Surrender of General Lee and his entire army to Lieut. General Grant April 9th, 1865. This memorable event terminated the Great Rebellion." - Philadelphia: Joseph Hoover, 1866. 17 1/8x23 3/4". Lithograph by P.S Duval & Son. Original hand color. Print dry mounted to old board but in stable condition. Minor staining in right hand side of sky and in bottom left hand margin. Else, very good condition. A bold and fictitious depiction of the surrender of General Lee to U.S. Grant on April 9th, 1865. The actual event took place inside the McLean House at Appomattox Court House, Virginia in a very private and quiet manner. This picture uses the conventions of classical great surrender pictures such as those of Washington at Yorktown and Gates at Saratoga by John Trumbull, or any of the many heroic pictures of Napoleon Bonaparte in the nineteenth century. The two combatants sit on their horses in a grove of trees, while in the background the Union army is lined up to witness the great event. Hoover's desire to express the nobility of the men and the historic import of the event surpassed any need for accuracy in his conveying to the American people that the Great War was over.
