A beautifully limned miniature portrait painting, on natural organic material, by Raphaelle Peale. The sitter is a nice looking gentleman wearing a black coat, white stock and shirt. Housed in a metal case with a lock of hair in the glazed aperture on the reverse.
Condition of the painting is excellent, with no issues. The case is in good condition with some dents on the reverse. The sight size is 2" by 1 5/8", and the framed size is 2 3/8" by 2".
NOTE: Raphaelle Peale (1774 - 1825) was a member of the Peale family, which encompassed 17 artists, including Rembrandt, Anna Claypool, Charles Wilson, James, Rubens, etc. He was born in Annapolis, MD, and was the oldest son of Charles Wilson Peale, and was considered an extremely fine miniaturist and painter. His works are quite uncommon and are found in many important museums.
