An Italian miniature painting on natural wafer, Signed lower left "Mario Salvi". The sitter is identified, in the family history on the reverse, as Olivia Pia Salvi.
Olivia, a pretty young woman in a pale blue gown, is painted in a soft manner, with luminescent skin tones, as was the Italianate style of the time. The artist composed the painting very carefully, with the almost cloud-like hair framing the face and curling down to follow the neckline of her dress. He used her red lips as the focal point of the painting, subtlely accentuating that color with red flowers at the bodice border and even in the band in her hair.
The painting is in extremely fine condition, with no cracks, chips, or bowing. The size is 2 3/8" by 2".
