Done in vivid colors, this watercolor on natural wafer shows an attractive young woman, seated in a green velvet chair, wearing a royal blue gown with a wide lace fichu and matching cuffs, and holding a bright yellow scarf on her lap. Information on the backing paper and repeated on the cardboard back indicates that the sitter is Eudora Palmer of Jewett City, CT, and that the miniature was painted on March 18, 1843. The artist signed the piece, somewhat illegibly, on the right arm of the chair.
This condition of this piece is excellent, with no cracks, chips, bowing paint loss, or restoration. The giltwood frame is structurally sound and shows expected wear, but in this case it actually adds to the charm. Quite large, the sight size is 6" by 4 1/4", with a framed size of 7 3/8" by 5 5/8".
