This porcelaneous jug or ewer is an intact and rare example of the originality and vitality of the potters from Changsha who made it in the eighth century. It was presumably intended as a wine jug and it is decorated with the moulded figures of three wild and possibly drunken male dancers. They appear to be from Central Asia, their hair is long and dishevelled and their clothes are in disarray. They certainly look as though they are making a lot of noise. At the same time, the jug itself is very...

The ram is depicted at rest with its legs folded under its body. These animal figurines played an important part in Chinese burial practices. Very similar ram figurines, frequently with an early celadon yueyao glaze, are quite common in the Jin dynasties, a century or so later (there are nice examples in the New York Metropolitan Museum and the Shanghai Museum). This one appears to have been cold painted with a white slip, traces of which still remain. Length: 13.2 cm; width: 6.4 cm. Condi...

It is particularly interesting that each face has quite distinct features, possibly referring to different ethnic backgrounds. As Jenny So h...
