An exquisite example of a Qing rank badge (Buzi, Mandarin Square); the golden pheasant (Jinji) is the symbol of the second civil official. Border with gold wire way-style stitching. Traditional motifs include: the peach (shoutao); 5 bats (bianfu, reinforcing the meaning of good fortune in Chinese, fu); the peony; and lingzhi (magical mushroom). They surround the golden pheasant emerging from the sea and flying towards the sun. This artifact is skillfully embroidered in running, flatting, slanting, straight and couching stitch.
Size: 31.8 cmx 31. 8cm
Condition: A small hole at the upper right corner, probably used to attach the square in a collector’s folio; a few loose threads from normal wear.
