This is a beautiful, authentic Roman period single pendant earring made with solid gold. It dates from the 1st-3rd century AD. The pendant part is decorated with a green glass bead, a finely-crafted filigree gold tubular bead, and a lovely little pearl that still has most of its lustre nearly two thousand years after it left the sea. Pearls in the Roman period came from the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean; along with silk from China, they represented the height of fashion and extravagance. The earring is unrestored, and weighs about 3 grams.
Size: 3.5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide.
Condition: Very good, partial calcite encrustation on the glass bead which could be cleaned off; still wearable.
Price: USD $460; CAD $620 (13% HST will be applied on all sales in Ontario)
