A large Vietnamese (Annamese) shallow dish from the Hoi An shipwreck, painted in underglaze blue and over glaze green enamel with a Buddhistic lion at play amongst cloud scrolls within simple line borders and four cloud medallions, the underside with a simple green lappet band, 15th century. Provenance: Ex Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood, Exeter, UK. Diameter: 34 cm. Condition: As generally happens, the seawater has completely erased the iron red enamels that would have formed part of the decoration, leaving only a shadow of the pattern on the surface of the glaze. Otherwise, excellent intact condition with no damage.
