These large beads with stratified eyes and trailed decoration are very rare. They were almost certainly made in one of the Hellenistic settlements around the Black Sea. They were traded to the Sarmatian and Scythian nomadic peoples who controlled vast inland territories, and who attached these beads as signs of status and wealth to personal clothing and to horse apparel. This example has a core of very dark blue glass with applied eyes in four layers (white, red, white, blue) separated with a ribbon of trailed white glass. Fourth to third Century BCE. Dimensions: 2.8 cm. x 2.6 cm. Condition: Excellent, with only very small chips and wear commensurate with age and use. Provenance: From a private Italian collection. Price: USD $1100; CAD $1460 (13% HST will be applied on all sales in Canada)
