A superb marble bust of a young woman made by acclaimed Italian sculptor Lot Torelli (1835-1935).

Lot Torelli, born in Florence, was recognized in his time and was the recipient of several awards among which the Cross of Gold at the International Exhibition in London. He was often commissioned to sculpt portraits and funeral monuments.

The bowl comes with a black lacquer lid, later made by Suzuki Hyosaku (1874-1943), a master craftsman, who received several commissions from the Imperial Household Agency during the Taisho period (1912-1926).

A very interesting koro (incense burner) from the Kutani tradition, dating from the Edo period (1615-1868).

The koro is made in the aka-e (red painting) style and is decorated with motifs of a wandering saint and intricate patterns. The top of the lid features a shishi (lion), a typical ornament for incense burners in the Chinese and, by influence, Japanese cultures.

A very attractive Oku-gorai chawan (tea bowl) dating from the Momoyama period (1568-1600) to the beginning of the Edo period (1615-1868). Oku-gorai wares made in the Japanese Karatsu area, in Northern Kyushu, emulate vessels from the Korean Koryo dynasty (935-1392).

A very fine ewer dating from the Chinese Liao dynasty (916-1125). It is made in the shape of a rooster comb, a design often used for such potteries of that era, with two holes to insert a cord or a chain.

The ewer shows traces of its age; the white slip covering it is worn in some places, but it is that condition specifically that makes it such an attractive piece, from the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic point of view.
