This splendid yunomi (tea cup) was made by a master craftsman named Naoki Tomojiro (1903-2000). Trained as a painter, the artist entered the world of ceramic at the age of 61 and did not stop making potteries until the age of 95. Within that relatively short span, he exhibited his works in some of Japan’s best-known venues such as Mitsukoshi deparment store in Nihonbashi and Kuroda Toen gallery in Shibuya.
This particular cup is made in the raku style of pottery, invented more than 400 years ago for the Japanese tea ceremony. Yunomi, however are often used more casually. Yet, the wonderful black robe decorated with an elegant tsuru (crane) gives a noble air to the humble vessel.
Please inquire if you have some questions.
The yunomi bears the potter’s seal and is in perfect condition. It will be shipped in a signed box.
