painting was made by the British artist David Theyre Lee-Elliott, (1903-1988). David Theyre Lee Elliott was born in Sussex. After having studied art, he worked as a commercial artist and a scene artist and slowly developed his unique style. He had several solo exhibitions in London, The Hague, New York, Hong Kong, and Tokyo from 1956.

This particular painting was purchased at an exhibition there. It is signed by the artist and dated 1974. It is a watercolor and gouache with pen and ink and is titled “Chinese Figures in Snow”.

Bernard Leach, the master potter, who shared his passion of Japan with Lee-Elliott said of his friend’s work: “His drawings are evocative with a nice and precise balance between the naturalism of close observation and an abstraction of the imagination. A fair point of advantage between the outer and the inner resulting in a naturally personal handwriting or style”.

Lee-Elliott is known for his design of the book cover of Hemingway’s “Farewell to Arms”. He also has a work exposed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
