Tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog) sculpted from a salmon-hued granite. Mid-Edo Period ca. 1700. Very minor old loss. Lotus-form dais appearing in the photos, sculpted from a brown igneous stone ca. 1800, is included.

Tanuki height: 35 cm
Width: 20 cm
Depth: 23 cm
Lotus-form dais height: 13 cm
Upper-surface diameter: 28.5 cm.

Tanuki, of which stone depictions are extremely uncommon, are typically characterized by a daunting display of testicular fortitude--assuming, that is, the beast in question is no older than mid-Edo Period ca. 1750. In the case of earlier examples, tanuki typically are gendered far more discreetly, even to the point of appearing gender-neutral, as in the example offered herein.

A very old Tanuki, then, seated upon a lotus-form dais. Highly collectible.
