Joan Hurst and Jill Kingsbury were active in the 1940's-1950's. Their work was part of an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in 1946 in New York.
This hand-wrought necklace is likely a one of a kind. The medallion had two sterling discs with a hand-carved wooden head which certainly looks like a devil. Highly detailed and a true work of modernist silver art. Check out the tiny teeth, spiraling eyes, hair, and horns. The work of Hurst and Kingsbury is not often seen. Rope chain is original to the piece. Tests out to be 94% purity, so slightly greater than sterling.
Closed, wearable length is 14 3/4". Center medallion measures 1 11/16" x 1 1/2". Depth is 3/4".
Weight is 61.5 grams.
Signed and hallmarked "Hurst Kingsbury Sterling".
In excellent vintage condition. The wooden head is slightly different on one side than the other, but I believe this was the way it was carved. I've shown lots of pics, so just zoom in.
