This is a Native American Indian PAPAGO Basket from the Ajo area, Arizona. It measures about 10 3/4" X 10 3/4" X 12 1/2" ( 27.4 cm X 27.4 cm X 31.9 cm ). The Tohono O'odham people were Native American Indians who were located in the Sonoran Desert of Southeastern Arizona and Northwest Mexico. Tohono O'odham means "Desert People". They were known as the Papago, but they rejected their name (given by the Conquistadores) because it literally meant Tepary-bean Eater. Their land covered 3 Arizona counties: Pima, Pinal, and Maricopa. The main Reservation was located between Tucson and Ajo.
