This is a RUSLAN & LUDMILLA Russian Porcelain Plate that has a diameter of 7 1/2" ( 19 cm ). Ruslan and Ludmilla is the First Plate in the Russian Legends Collection, the first series of limited-edition porcelain plates created in Russia. Crafted in the age-old tradition of miniature painting on lacquer, Ruslan and Ludmilla is issued in an edition limited to 195 firing days. Ruslan and Ludmilla was inspired by a poem by Alexander Pushkin. Tame peacocks roam in exquisite gardens, precious jewels spring forth from the footsteps of white deer, a lovely maid born of the snow melts in the spring sun, the wicked witch named Baba Yaga flies through the air in a mortar with pestle. This is the wondrous world of Russian folklore; a literature of the people where the humble fare better than the rich and the true of heart triumph over the powers of evil. No other art form gives us a better idea of the imagination and fantasy that have colored Russia's rich cultural heritage than the fairy tales and legends of her people. Told over and over by nurses and grandmothers, these beloved tales have provided a wellspring of inspiration for Russians artists for centuries. More than 150 years ago the story of Ruslan and Ludmilla was committed to writing in a poem by Alexander Pushkin, one of Russia's most celebrated poets. Yet much of Russia's fantasy and fiction is virtually unknown to the western world. Thus, the release of the first true Russian limited-edition porcelain plate, depicting the ancient legend of Ruslan the knight and Ludmilla the fair maid, marks an important and unprecedented cultural event. Vinogradoff is proud to present Ruslan and Ludmilla, first plate in the Russian Legends collection and the first collector's plate ever to be produced in the USSR.
