Cranes and gold filigree decorate the incandescent blue of this meticulously formed tall dish enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Kawase Junichi (Kawase Chikushun II, 1923-2007), father of Kawase Shinobu. The dish is 11-3/4 inches (30 cm) diameter, 6-1/2 inches (17 cm) tall and in perfect condition. Junichi was born eldest son into the Kyoto pottery family of Kawase Chikuo. He graduated the Kyoto Municipal School of Art as well as apprenticing under his father. In 1949 he moved to Kanagawa prefecture to work at the Mitsui Jozan Kiln, establishing his own kiln in 1960. He succeeded the name Chikushun in 1979, placing this piece signed Junichi, before that. His son is the Seiji master Kawase SHinobu, who studied under his father Junichi and grandfather from 1968.
