Offered is a vintage lot of two Archimede Seguso studio glass pieces consisting of an egg-shaped paperweight and a perfume bottle. Made of red, yellow, and blue glass, which creates a rainbow effect in the light, both pieces are from the Carnevale collection for Tiffany & Co and date from the 1980s. The paperweight is 6” tall by 3 ½” wide, and the perfume bottle is 4 ¾” tall, including the stopper by 2 ¾ ” wide. Both are signed similarly on the base as shown, and in excellent condition, with signs of light use on the bases and no chips, scuffs, or repairs noted. For centuries the name Seguso has been associated with glass art from Murano. Considered one of the greatest Venetian glass masters, Archimede Seguso (1909-1999) was a key to the survival and revival of traditional glassblowing techniques in Murano during the second half of the 20th Century. Seguso crafted a timeless array of glass pieces throughout his career. His collaboration with Tiffany & Co inspired Seguso to create works that combined the ancient and the new. His influence on American Studio glass is significant. Seguso was one of the 60 American and Venetian artists included in Venice and American Studio Glass (September 2020 to January 2021) on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Italy. Curated by Tina Oldknow and William Warmus, both former curators of modern and contemporary glass at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the exhibition was the first to closely examine the influences of traditional Venetian glass-working techniques, as well as the Venetian aesthetic, on American Studio Glass from the 1960s to the present.
