Offered is a vintage Leon Applebaum studio glass perfume bottle with swirling rainbow-colored leaves and a clear round chamber encased in heavy clear glass with a matching freeform stopper. The bottle is 8" tall, including the stopper, by 4 1/2" wide, in excellent condition, with minor scratches on the bottom consistent with age and light use, and no chips, scuffs, or repairs noted. The bottle is signed on the bottom, as shown. Born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1945, Leon Applebaum grew up in what would become the birthplace of American Studio Glass. In 1973, after completing a BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and a MA from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Applebaum studied at Orrefor's Glass School in Sweden. There he began to explore the Swedish style of optically thick glass that would influence the future of his work. After returning to the US, he pursued an MFA in glass from the Rochester Institute of Technology. During this period, he synthesized Swedish glass techniques with his ideas of using the color spectrum and trapping air to create bubbles that continue to define his work. Applebaum's work is represented in many museums' permanent collections, including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC, the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, and the Ajeto Glass Museum in Novy Bor, Czech Republic, and represented in galleries, nationally and internationally. He resides with his family in Plattsburgh, NY, at the Sahaj Glass Studio.
