Exquisite Tiffany Japonesque sterling silver centerpiece with applied fish, ca 1881.
Exterior decorated with scaly and gaping fish swimming among drifting, swaying plants. Ornament is applied and chased on honeycomb hand-hammered ground. Fine details including seaweed clinging to rim and scrolled seashells on foot. A veritable fishbowl.
Engraved presentation dated 1883 in stylistically-integrated wavy ribbon script: "Gracie, Bedouin / Match race / Oct 18th 1883 / Course 26 Miles to Windward and return / from Sandy Hook. / Won by / Bedouin, beating Gracie / some 15 minutes."
Form: Curved sides with flat and wavy rim, and domed foot with bracket supports. Interior gilt washed.
Can be used for serving punch. Definitely something to bring out at the next party. Fully marked including pattern no. 6483 (first produced in 1881), phrase “Sterling-Silver”, and director’s letter M (1873-91). Fine condition.
