French 950 silver and marble centerpiece based on Marie Antoinette’s garden folly, the Temple d’Amour at Versailles. Round stepped marble base with silver imbricated leaf-and-berry border. Six fluted columns with silver base and Corinthian capitols supporting ring architrave with silver rinceaux and beading. Detachable silver cupola with open trapezoidal trellis frames between pilasters, and vase finial. Inside is a gilt flame—the flame to eternal love, such as burned, according to romantic legend, between Marie Antoinette and the Comte de Fersen.

The Temple d’Amour is in the grounds of the Petit Trianon, where Marie Antoinette came with her favorites to escape the stringent court etiquette. A beautiful example of turn-of-the-century Neoclassical Revival, and the enduring fascination with the doomed queen.

The centerpiece comes with a two-part plateau with open balustrade and mirrored ground. Silver fully marked with French Mercury heads and maker’s stamps for Alphonse Dutac, who was active in Paris in the late 19th and early 20th century.
