Victorian Classical sterling silver loving cup. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1893. Bellied urn with 3 twisted and scaly dolphin handles and raised and round foot. Interior richly gilt.
Three-sided presentation framed by dense and exuberant flowers and leaves, and Japonesque cattails and lily pads: “J.W. Doane. / Mardi Gras / 1894.” (1); “From his / friends” (2); "Major Genl. Schofield. / P.L. Yoe. / A.H. Burley. / John Tyrrell. / A.F. Seeberger. / Henry Elliott. / Erskine M. Phelps.” (3).
Fully marked including maker’s and retailer’s stamps (Spaulding & Co.), date symbol, and no. 335. Excellent condition.
