Art Nouveau Craftsman glazed silver overlay pitcher. Made by Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati in 1894. Conical body with crimped trefoil mouth and scroll handle. Fruiting grapevine with overlapping leaves in the greenery-yallery palette and blue bunches. Overlay engraved and gilt with dense leafing scrollwork and asymmetrical cartouche engraved with interlaced script monogram. Mouth and handle in silver gilt collars.
The painter was Mary Madeline Nourse (1870-1959), a Cincinnati native who worked at Rookwood from 1891 to 1905. She studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and her work is in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Fully marked including maker’s and painter’s stamps, shape no. 725, and size letter E. Silver marked “Solid Silver / Pat. Jan. 5-86”. Very good condition.
